My 2010 Gaming Goals

I never really make specific goals at the beginning of the year in regards to gaming. I always make a few personal goals for myself (which a lot of people call their “resolutions”) but I never really do a separate gaming category, but this year I decided to do things a little bit differently.

2009’s main gaming goals were to:
1) Finish more games than I did in 2008
2) Finish more games than I buy in 2009

My goals were met and I was satisfied. At the end of 2009 I turned 30 and saw that the number of games I finished (completed the single player story mode, not necesarrily getting 100% achievements or trophies) was28. So I figured my main gaming goal for 2010 would be to finish 30 games in celebration of my 30th year, but I am taking that several steps further by giving myself specific criteria. This will help broaden my focus, and hopefully help eliminate a bit of my backlog as well. So here is my 2010 goal list:

Gaming Goals of 2010:

Complete 30 Games

  • 5 games must be Xbox 360
  • 5 games must be PS3
  • 5 games must be Wii
  • 5 games must be handheld (DS, PSP, GBA)
  • 5 games must be retro (anything from Dreamcast and back)
  • 5 games must be 100% complete (All Achievements or Trophies earned)

Furthermore

-Games working towards individual system goals must be games I have not beaten before. It’s fine to play through and beat games to add to the overall list total but I will not count them in the 5 required games per category. For example: I finished Mass Effect’s main campaign on Casual in 2009, and I finished it again on Hardcore in 2010. Mass Effect will go on the list of games completed but cannot count towards the 5 games that have to be completed for the 360 in 2010.

-Games in the 100% Complete category CAN be games from previous completed games lists. For example: If I am able to earn all achievements in Mass Effect this year, I will add it to the list of 100% complete (but not to the 360 list as stated above).

Thoughts

I feel that some of the games I finish this year will end up on both the 100% list and the PS3 or 360 list, which would in theory bring my total short of 30. However at the time of this writing I have already finished 2 games that cannot count towards system totals (Mass Effect and NES Contra which I have completed both of previously). I expect to actually finish more than 30 titles this year, just looking at what I have planned to play.

The only issue I see is that I put the 100% complete requirement for 5 games on myself, which will take away much of my time getting through other games. Focusing more of my attention on those games which I require 100% completion. I also plan on playing through a few RPG’s which also consume a bit more of my gaming time than I am used to.

My time will also be divided with Star Trek Online and possibly Lego Universe which are two MMO’s I am quite interested in being a part of. I am hoping to be able to find balance between these and my console/handheld gaming.

Why so serious?

When looking over last years totals, I noticed how many games were 360 games. My other systems were really not getting enough love, and my handhelds especially were neglected. By imposing some requirements on myself it will at least get me to spread my focus to all of my systems to get some gaming done. I am fairly certain that the 360 will still be my dominant system of the year, but I am hoping this will persuade me to play my PS3, Wii, DS, and PSP more.

I am also hoping that this will help me eliminate some of my very long backlog. I do plan on getting a few of the big titles in the Q1 of 2010, so it may be a bit difficult, but I have several Wii and PS3 titles that I haven’t even played yet. I even have 360 titles I haven’t even opened. I’ve also had a desire to take part in more retro gaming so by adding the retro games requirement, I feel that I will dedicate a little more time to that as well.

In closing

I had thought of getting even more ridiculous by stating that 5 games had to be RPG’s, and that I wanted to play more racing games, but I felt that was getting out of hand. Looking at what I have written above it appears that I will already have my hands quite full this year with games. The only unfortunate part of all of this is that if I can be successful in this endeavor it really doesn’t leave much for next year. I either have to ramp it up even more and impose more requirements on myself, or not bother with gaming goals whatsoever.

I really hope I can do this, I think it will help me to broaden my gaming horizons and feel quite accomplished when I look back on this year in 12 months.

Anyone else out there have gaming goals they set for the year?

Fuzz’s Top 10 Favorite Games of the Past Decade

Here are my top 10 games of the last decade (2000-2009). I put some thought into this for a while, and I think this is the most accurate list I can put out there right now (I know some of these are multiplatform, but I just listed the system I played them on):

10.  Bioshock (360) – Absolutely loved the world of Rapture. I loved the art design in this game, and the storyline was fantastic. I loved getting creeped out in the game, and loved the “oh sh*t!” moments when going up against Big Daddies.

9.  Batman Arkham Asylum (PS3) – Amazing game. The graphics, the gameplay, the art style, the story…it was all fun. And there was a lot of love for the source material which you could see in some of the hidden details in the game. I would probably consider this the best game based off of a comic franchise, it is THE Batman game, and I am beyond excited to play the sequel.

8.  Portal (360) - Fun game, and clever as hell. Not only was it a tricky puzzle type game at times, but it kept me laughing as well. Best ending song of all time. I would love to see a follow up but I fear if we do it will cheapen the first one. I think Portal was one of the greatest little gaming surprises I stumbled upon.

7.  Rez (PS2) – Audio/Visual orgy. I had actually played the Dreamcast version in college, but purchased the PS2 one when I saw it. I also have the XBL version but have yet to play through that one entirely.

6.  Gears of War 2 (360) – A real fun shooter, and what I consider a buddy game. Love the cover system. One of the few games that I ever wanted to play co-op with a friend online, which is a fantastic way to experience the game. And speaking of online I really dug the Horde mode in this game. I thought this game improved over the first one tremendously. My only issue with it is that my damned “Friends with benefits” gamerpic never showed up, even though I unlocked the achievement. But I would consider Gears one of my favorite shooters.

5.  Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
– Epic game. Probably my favorite of the series. It is a game that I want to play through again, and especially to enjoy all the extra stuff like developer podcasts.

4.  Phantasy Star Online (DC) – Loved the hell out of this game. This came out during my junior year in college and we played it constantly. One of the few games that I actually played through multiple times. I loved the game so much that I bought version 2, the GameCube release, PSU, PSP, and even tried out the card battling one.

3.  Samba de Amigo (DC) – My first music/rhythm game, and I still love it to this day. We busted this thing out at many parties and everyone loves giving it a spin. Still to this day it is probably my favorite music/rhythm game.

2.  Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX) – Introduced me to BioWare, and I absolutely loved the storyline. It was great to immerse myself into another era of Star Wars. Probably my favorite Star Wars game of all time.

1.  Mass Effect (360) – This one may be guilty of being my “game of the moment” but really no other RPG has captivated me as much as this one. In fact I didn’t like this game the first time I played it, and I dismissed it. After playing Fallout I was back into the RPG state of mind and took on Mass Effect and now I am in love with it. Whenever I am not playing Mass Effect I am thinking about playing Mass Effect, and I am already looking forward to my next playthough, and I practically never play through a game more than once.

It’s amazing to look back on the past 10 years and see what the gaming world has given us. It has been a long but amazing ten years, and I look forward to another 10 years of incredible gaming advancement.

Favorite Games of 2009

Copied from my blog over at CheapAssGamer.

All of these are obviously just my opinion based on what I was able to play this year.

Best Retail Game of the Year:

Batman Arkham Asylum

Amazing game. The graphics, the gameplay, the art style, the story…it was all fun. And there was a lot of love for the source material which you could see in some of the hidden details in the game. I would probably consider this the best game based off of a comic franchise, it is THE Batman game, and I am beyond excited to play the sequel.

Honourable mentions:

Assassin’s Creed 2

Thought it was a good improvement from the first game. I love the fact that you could buy things to improve the town, dye your clothing, and buy other upgrades. I found a lot more fun just exploring Italy than I did exploring in the first game. I was also happy to have been able to get 1000/1000 Gamerscore in this game.

Modern Warfare 2

I am probably one of the few people I know who plays games like these for the single player experience. I do not game online too much, because I am usually pretty bad at first person shooters so when I am online it is just a bunch of frustration. I actually really enjoyed the story line in this game, and a lot of the story twists. I do also like the addition of Spec Ops mode which I need to more fully explore.

Best Downloadable Game of the Year (DSiware, Wiiware, PSN, XBLA, PC):

Peggle

Addictive as hell, amusing, and satisfying. I found it hard to not smile whenever clearing a board.

Honourable Mentions:

Pixel Junk Eden

An audio visual treat. This was a fun game just to put on and play without really putting too much thought into it. I absolutely loved the visual style and the music in this game, though I unfortunately have not gotten too far into the game.

Splosion Man

Hilarious and challenging. Also love the fact that they included unlockable gamerpics and avatar awards in this game. I need to play further in this one though.

Best Handheld Game of the Year:

Scribblenauts

Great idea and lots of fun. Missed a little on execution, but I am not a big handheld gamer at the moment so this takes top spot for me.

Best game of the year that shouldn’t be a game of the year (IMO):

DJ Hero

It is challenging, but I found the gameplay rewarding, and the music fantastic. Unlike when I play Guitar Hero or Rockband, I felt like I had an actual effect on the music. I found A LOT of fun with this game.

Honorable Mentions:

Beatles Rock Band

What I like about this game isn’t just the difference in visual style or the fact that it is the first Rock Band game where I actually know and like all of the music on it. But there is also a lot of love poured into this game, and you can feel it.

Punch Out

This game was an excellent throwback to the NES game, which was a game that I loved. I loved the visuals in this game, the music was great, and the characters were as fun as I remember. The new additions were a nice welcome and mixed well with the nostalgic elements they provided.

That’s all I’ve got. I spent a bit of my gaming hours in 2009 revisiting older games though, so I didn’t get to play all of the year’s big titles. Hope everyone had a great gaming 2009, and an even better 2010!

It’s like the end of a decade

Been a bit, that’s the way it always is.  I get distracted and busy, but I will try to add some geekiness to the web here with this post.

On the gaming front, the year went pretty well.  Since I wrote last I did give Fallout 3 another shot, and ended up really liking it a lot.  I finished it as a good guy, and just last night I bought all the DLC since it was half off on Xbox Live.  I plan on going through it again as an evil bastard as well as playing through the DLC.  I also gave Mass Effect another shot and absolutely fell in love with it.  I have finished one playthrough and I am currently on my second playthrough on Hardcore difficulty.  In between those games I was able to complete Assassin’s Creed 2 with 1000/1000 gamerscore, and it was a fantastic game.

I have also been slowly chipping away at Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, and Uncharted on the PS3.  Over the holidays I also started Final Fantasy IV on the DS since I had it with me.  I have a feeling all of these games will suffer as I am still on my Mass Effect/Fallout high.  But I am glad to have found my love for RPG type of games again.  I would love to finish all of my Mass Effect/Fallout playthoughs before the end of the year, but that just isn’t going to happen.  I guess the goal is to finish them completely by the end of February, because then new games start getting dropped on me.  I have Mass Effect 2 coming in January and then after that comes: Splinter Cell Conviction, God of War 3, Star Trek Online, Final Fantasy XIII, and Bioshock 2.  And that’s all just in the first quarter!

I also want to spend more time next year playing retro games and backlog games, but I will touch more on my gaming resolutions for 2010 in a future post.  As for how 2009 went as a whole, it was much better than previous years.  I was able to finish 28 games, which far surpassed my recent high of 15 games.  You can see all the ones finished on my post at Cheap Ass Gamer by clicking here.  Also note that two of the games completed in 2009 were to max gamerscore, so they were 100% complete.  I feel accomplished but sad that I couldn’t have accomplished a little bit more, hopefully next year I can do even better.

I’m finding some interest in my hobbies again because I am choosing to focus on vintage items and things of a classic nature.  Current Masters of the Universe figures are very much a throwback to the original 80’s toys, so stuff like that is acceptable.  But as far as Transformers and GI Joe’s go, I am trying to focus on my vintage collection, and get rid of a lot of my modern stuff…whether that actually happens is another thing, but that is my goal.  It will be difficult though because it looks like I am doing more conventions next year than I ever have.

BotCon 2010 will be taking place in Disney World, so I pretty much have to go to that.  I’ve already made semi-solid plans to attend PAX East in Boston, and JoeCon 2010 in Providence, RI.  Others on the map are: C2E2 in Chicago, BrickWorld in Chicago, Chicago Comic-Con, PAX Prime in Seattle, and GenCon in Indianapolis.  I most likely won’t be able to attend everything, but I sure as hell am going to try to attend as much as I can.  It’s going to be a rough, expensive, and geeked out year!

That’s all for now, I will probably be updating the other blog here shortly as well.  And expect another post here soon.

Gaming, boredom, and an overall sense of “meh”

I’ve been doing a lot of console gaming lately.  Trying to finish the story modes in much of my backlog, as well as pick up a few extra PS3 trophies, or add onto my gamerscore.  This time of year is always rough for a console gamer with all of the big releases set to come out in the October/November time frame, but I am doing my best to try to stay with it.

I have completed 100% of Lego Indiana Jones, and it isn’t often that I can say I earned 1000/1000 gamerpoints on a game, so that is a high point for me.  I’ve also been able to finish the story mode on Little Big Planet, as well as finish a play-through of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.  Today I am working on Modern Warfare 2, which so far is fantastic.  I’m trying to knock out as many games as I can so I can give Fallout 3 another honest shot and maybe get into Borderlands since it looks like a fun time.

My other hobbies and such have left me bored.  I find little interest in collecting these days, and anytime I have the urge to go out looking for anything I can’t find a thing at all.  I look at everything in my house and it just feels like clutter that I should part with, but I can never seem to be able to.  Every time I say I want to give up collecting, or have lost the love for it, I always find my way back to it.  So I ask myself is it a “crisis of faith” that needs to be addressed every-so-often, or is it my subconscious trying to tell me that it is time to let go?

I am certain that come time to leave that part of me behind, that I will still hold on to some items, but I feel that I could probably let go of a lot, and even possibly just stop looking for current things being released.  I have major compulsion issues when it comes to hoarding/collecting and sometimes I wish we could go live in a small apartment where we would be forced to live with less…and get rid of just about everything I own.

*sigh*  If I wasn’t sick right now I would go have a drink…

This Week in Geek?

Just a small selection of geek/nerd related linkage from the interwebs that I felt I should share here for the 3 of you to see.

First off is a splendid wedding cake that just makes me jealous.  I do have a wedding coming up in a little over a year, maybe I can get this done.  (Note: Storm Troopers not included with cake)

You can check out the entire cake post by clicking here.

I always said that my dream fanboy car would be the Delorean.  I would have to assume that anyone owning or driving a Delorean would have some sort of love for the Back to the Future movies.  Well that all changed today when I was passed along a link to an ebay auction.  My new dream fanboy car was driven on screen by Adam West, and can be found on ebay for close to $20k with 6 days left.

batmobile

You can check out the auction by clicking here.

And finally a video that my buddy Ray and I stumbled upon this weekend while looking up old cartoon theme intros.  Not sure how I never came across this one before, and I am sure it is old but I got a rather good laugh out of it, so it is my duty to share it here as well.

If you have troubles watching the embedded movie about you can see it at YouTube by clicking here.

Speaking of YouTube, I have flirted with the idea of doing some video reviews of all of the geekery in my house.  I have a lot of various toys and other items that I have been opening up and displaying, I figured it would be an opportune time to start doing some videos.  I know there are many others out there already doing the same thing (several of them friends of mine) so not sure how much value I could bring to that sector.  So Deefuzz joining the YouTube reviewing community: hot or not?

The One About Gaming

I hardly find enough time during the day to engage in any constructive pursuits.  I really should be filling my days with house work, bass practice, learning Spanish, and other random hobbies but instead I usually stare blankly at my laptop while the TV drones on in the background.  Occasionally I use this time to game it up, and it almost becomes a chore at times.

The inspiration comes from Toys R US and their damned “Buy 2 get 1 free” game sale that they have every year.  And every year I visit the store and add to my stack of backlogged games to play.  I try to balance it out so I am working on 1 game at a time per system, but then I usually end up getting myself sidetracked and eventually move on to another game entirely.  I’ve got so much to work on in fact that if a game doesn’t completely pull me in within the first 2 or 3 hours spent on it I usually don’t even bother going on.  This happened with both Mass Effect and Fallout 3 (gasp!) which are both really well received by a large chunk of the gaming populous, but for some reason I just couldn’t get into them.  I’ve even tried approaching them again later (even starting the games over) and felt the same about them.  I guess as I get older I get even more impatient and cannot put many hours into a large scale world/rpg.

I used to love playing the Grand Theft Auto series too, but when GTA4 came out I played a bit for the first few weeks and then my interest waned.  I felt like all I was doing was drive to point A (while looking at the onscreen compass/map), do something, drive to point B (while looking at the onscreen compass/map), and repeat.  The only difference came when I strayed off of the mission path to beat up a hooker or run over a pedestrian, and let’s face it, even beating up hookers gets old after a while.

The current works in progress are: Scribblenauts on the DS; Prototype/Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2/Beatles Rock Band/Lego Star Wars on the 360; Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 (actually playing it on the PS3); Ratchet and Clank Size Matters on the PSP; and Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii.  Unfortunately the Wii usually gets ignored, which is why Super Mario Galaxy is still on my “to be completed” list.

I’m still working on making this years completed games list exceed the amount of games that I purchase.  And I have already succeeded in surpassing the number of games completed last year, and I still have about 2 and a half months to go so I hope to add a few more to the list.  I’ve been keeping track on Cheap Ass Gamer which you can see by clicking here.

As far as next year goes…anyone want to do PAX?  PAX East is in Boston in March, PAX Prime is in Seattle in September.  Definitely considering joining some of the people on the Penny Arcade forums for the PAX East train trip if no one I know wants to go/travel together.  Hit me up here or on the cell if you are interested in hitting up one of the PAX conventions with the Fuzz!

Off to Chicago this weekend so hopefully I can work on some portable gaming.

So Much To Do…

I’ve not only been  trying to play catchup since JoeCon, but my time has been divided quite a bit in the last few weeks.  I finish G.I. Joe on the 360, it was a good time, and now have begun both Prototype and Call of Duty World at War.  Batman Arkham Asylum sits there unopened and unloved along with Red Faction and Fight Night Round 4, and I have a pile of XBLA and PSN games that need playing as well.

I haven’t made it to the comic shop in over a month, so my pull is most likely getting ready to explode and consume some poor clerk.  But my main feeling about that is sadness  that I am so far behind on the fantastic Blackest Night event that is currently tearing through the DC Universe.

Speaking of DC Universe, there have been no signs of anything new to add to my collection.  Which is actually a good thing, as I have a Sideshow order getting ready to go through, and a MattyCollector order to place later this month for some MOTUC pieces.

Speaking of MOTU, I am almost finished (finally) with volume 1 of Filmation’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe on DVD.  What a crap show that is, it definitely does not hold up as well as Thundercats or G.I. Joe, and that is kind of sad.  At least it looks as though I am not alone in that feeling, because the consensus that I gather from He-Man.org is that the preferred canon is the mini-comics that came with the original toys in the 80’s.  Note to self: get MOTU mini-comics.

The collection room is also still where I left it prior to JoeCon.  Once I finish a couple more games I will probably focus a bit more energy into that project.

JoeCon 2009 Summary and Final Thoughts

I returned from JoeCon on Sunday, and things have been a bit hectic since.  I’ve been doing my best to collect my thoughts for a well thought out post on the topic, but I don’t want to put it off any longer so we will just see what happens here.

Prior to arriving I was a bit apprehensive since I really didn’t know any of the guys I was going to be rooming with, but I was still excited to be checking out a convention that is completely new to me.  I usually go to BotCon and to Wizard World Chicago every year, but this year I did not go to either show, so I was really needing a convention break.

I got to the hotel around 11pm on Wednesday night, and the first thing I noticed was the lack of fellow geeks in the lobby.  Had this been a BotCon there would be toys all over the place already, but there were none to be seen.  I want to stop myself there because I don’t want to post every single nuance and difference between JoeCon and BotCon, but there were several.  Definitely a different crowd, much more laid back and a little less over-bearing.  I also felt that the average age was much higher than that of BotCon, and it was much less crowded which I enjoyed tremendously.

More costumes at JoeCon, and some real good ones too!  There’s also a costume contest which was a fantastic good time.  I didn’t get pics of everyone but here are a few of my favorites:

Crimson Viper

Crimson Viper

Crimson Crystal Ball

Crimson Crystal Ball

I absolutely loved the Crimson Crystal Ball guy, apparently he does something off the wall every year.  I really look forward to seeing what he comes up with next year.

Some of the art entries were fantastic as well, and I will attach those to a gallery at the bottom of the post so you can check them out, along with my massive haul.  I was a little sloppy with picture taking this year, and it makes me a little sad.  I am normally snap happy when it comes to taking pictures but lately I have slacked tremendously, and as a result I have literally no images of all of us having fun.

Speaking of having fun, everyone was awesome.  The group from TriStateVipers that I roomed with (and roomed across from) were all incredible guys.  We all had a lot of fun, we meshed together well, and we will definitely be spending more time together in the future.  Thanks so much to you all, you really made me feel welcome and part of the group!

I tried to get as much coverage for HISSTank as I could while there, I did have some connectivity issues so I just added text from my iPhone during panels to the front page.  Massive props to the rest of our team for filling in the blanks and cleaning up my posts, hopefully next year we can work it even smoother.  I also blame the coverage bit for my lack of pictures, which I also hope to rectify last year.

I think I had more fun at this JoeCon than I had in a while at a convention, and will definitely return next year.  Next year’s con will be at the end of April/beginning of May in Providence, RI and I already have people to stay with so it looks to be a hell of a time!

A New Direction

In my constant struggle to have a presence online I have finally come to a crossroads.  It seems like I become two people at times.  Both are insanely geeky, but one is much more focused on toys, cartoons, and comics…and not everyone seems into that.

I felt that it might flow better if I could do two personal sites.  One site will function more as a blog, but will omit the part of my life that will be the focus of this site: major geek shit.

So my goal for this site is to focus on toys, collecting, conventions, cartoons, and comics.  Not sure how much of it will be reviews and how much will be blog style.  Some may just be showing off the latest hauls…it depends on how things feel down the road.  I also write news and moderate at HISSTank and TFW2005,  I am an author/editor over at Ish Talkers, and I have my own personal blog so I may be stretching myself a little thin, but I will do my best to keep up with content over here (hello run-on!).

So to start things off I am on my way to Kansas City to take part in my first CobraCon JoeCon in a few hours.  Really looking forward to it.  I will be geeking out pretty severely, and will do my best to share a full report upon my return.

And so begins the new Deefuzz DOT Com.
